Flower Pot Interchange cost ballooned to GH¢1 billion due to expanded scope of work - NRA replies Minority
Accra, Ghana - Nov 20, 2024 - The Flower Pot Interchange, a key infrastructure project in Accra, has undergone significant changes since its inception, resulting in a substantial increase in costs.
Initially valued at GH¢69.5 million in 2016, the project's scope has expanded, leading to a current estimated cost of nearly GH¢1 billion according to James Amoo-Gottfried, Director-General of the National Roads Authority.
In an interview on Joy Fm's Super Morning Show on Nov 20, Amoo stated that the original plan involved two overpasses totaling 120 meters of bridge length.
However, the revised scope now includes 1,022 meters of bridge length.
Key Features of the Flower Pot Interchange:
- Dual Carriageway Viaduct: 802 meters long with asphaltic concrete surfacing
- Ramps: A 140-meter ramp from Shiashie onto the viaduct towards Airport Hills and an 80-meter ramp connecting the viaduct to the motorway towards Tema
“The initial scope was entirely different. It was to involve two overpasses: one over the Flower Pot roundabout and another across the motorway (Accra-Tema Motorway), totalling about 120 metres of bridge length. What we have now is about 1,022 metres of bridge length,” he explained.
“So, the scope as originally planned and what we have now is entirely different,'' He added.
The interchange, which aims to ease traffic congestion on the north and south corridors of the Tema Motorway, enhancing connectivity and improving travel times for commuters was commissioned by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Tuesday Nov 19.
