Five Killed in Violent Shooting Incident in Nsawam Over Sand Mining Dispute

Eastern Region, Ghana - 02 May, 2025 - Five people have been killed in a violent shooting incident in the Nsawam area of Ghana's Eastern Region.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, at Asiyaw, near Akwane-Dobro, and is believed to be linked to a dispute over illegal sand mining operations.
According to the Eastern South Regional Police Command, a team was dispatched to the scene and found the bodies of five men with gunshot wounds. Preliminary investigations suggest a violent confrontation between two rival groups vying for control of sand mining activities in the area.
The police in a statement noted that they have recovered several items from the scene, including vehicles, firearms, and ammunition. The bodies of the deceased have been taken to the Police Hospital mortuary in Accra for identification and autopsy.
The police are working to track down and arrest those responsible for the violence.
The incident has raised concerns about the escalation of violence in the area, which has been plagued by illegal sand mining activities. The police are urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward to assist with their investigations.

POLICE INVESTIGATE SHOOTING INCIDENT AT ASIYAW, NEAR NSAWAM
The Eastern South Regional Police Command is investigating a shooting incident which occurred on 29th April, 2025 and resulted in the death of five (5) people at Asiyaw, near Akwane-Dobro, Nsawam.
The Police crime scene team which responded to the incident found the lifeless bodies of five (5) male adults with gunshot wounds.
The team also recovered the following items from the scene; • One (1) Toyota Tacoma vehicle, • One (1)Toyota Tundra vehicle, • One (1) pump action gun with seventeen (17) live cartridges, • Four (4) empty cartridges, • Three (3) 7.62/39mm empty shells,
• One (1) 9mm empty shell • Five (5) heavy duty motorbikes. Preliminary investigations suggest that there was a confrontation between two groups over sand winning at the location of the incident.
The bodies of the deceased have since been deposited at the Police Hospital mortuary for preservation, identification and autopsy while investigation continues to get the perpetrators arrested.
