Fire Engulfs Major Power Cables in Tema, Thousands Left in Dark
Tema, Ghana - 2 Jan, 2025 - A devastating fire has ravaged key power cables in Ghana's Tema region, leaving thousands without electricity on New Year's Eve. The blaze, which erupted on December 31, 2024, behind the Lube Oil Company, destroyed a significant portion of the cables, necessitating costly replacements.
Residents in affected areas, including Adjetey Ansah, Naval Quarters, and Bankuman, experienced temporary power outages, with some left in the dark until the following day. However, power has since been restored to all impacted customers.
The cause of the fire remains unknown, pending an investigation. Sakyiwaa Mensah, Public Relations Officer for the Tema Region of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), commended the Ghana National Fire Service for their prompt response in containing the blaze.
While the full extent of the damage is still being assessed, Mensah acknowledged that the cost of repairs would be substantial.
“the extent of damage is still being assessed. Until this assessment is done, it will be difficult for us to ascertain the cost associated.”
“it will be an appreciable cost as the damage is major,'' she added.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of fire safety, particularly during periods of dry weather. Mensah cautioned the public to exercise extreme caution when handling open flames, warning that careless behavior can lead to devastating consequences.
