EPA Cracks Down on Illegal Mining in Water Bodies with Immediate Ban

Accra, Ghana - 28 Jan, 2025 - A nationwide ban on mining in water bodies has been imposed by Ghana's Environmental Protection Authority (EPA), effective immediately.

The move aims to curb the destructive impact of illegal mining, known as "galamsey," on the country's ecosystems and public health.

The EPA's directive follows growing concerns over the environmental degradation caused by unauthorised mining operations. Acting CEO Prof. Nana Ama Browne Klutse warned that mining activities must comply with Ghana's environmental laws, including obtaining necessary permits and implementing sustainable practices.

To enforce the ban, the EPA will work with key stakeholders, including the Ministry of Environment, Science, and Technology, the Minerals Commission, and security agencies. Those found violating the directive will face prosecution, and equipment used in illegal mining operations will be seized.

The public has been urged to report any illegal mining activities to the EPA hotline; 0506699466 / 0506694760.

In a statement, Prof. Klutse emphasized the need for collective action to protect Ghana's environment, saying, "Together, we can secure a healthier and more prosperous future for all Ghanaians."
