Climate Alarm: Ghana Must Diversify Energy Mix - Denmark Ambassador
Tom Norring is Denmark's Ambassador to Ghana

Accra, Ghana - December 30 - Denmark's Ambassador to Ghana, Tom Norring, has emphasized the need for Ghana to build alternatives to fossil fuels in order to mitigate the impacts of climate change.

Ambassador Norring acknowledged Ghana's reliance on oil and gas production but stressed the importance of diversifying its energy mix and investing in renewable energy sources.

"We are not asking Ghanaians to stop producing oil and gas, but rather to build alternatives to ensure that you are not making the same mistakes we made," Ambassador Norring said in an interview with Lead News' Florence Kyei.

Denmark, which aims to phase out fossil fuels by 2050, is committed to sharing its expertise and experience with Ghana. Ambassador Norring highlighted Denmark's efforts in climate financing, noting that the country is "walking the talk and paying for funding."

On the question on 'Why should Ghana and other vulnerable countries be the ones to sacrifice?', Tom Noted that ''Denmark is walking the talk and paying for funding, climate financing. By 2050, Denmark would not have fossil fuel. We are facing out and making sacrifices, so vulnerable countries ike Ghana could also contribute.''

Ghana's energy transition is crucial, considering the country's reliance on oil and gas exports. The global energy transition poses significant risks to Ghana's economy, with oil production projected to decline and international companies redirecting their investments.

To navigate this transition, Ghana has established the National Energy Transition Committee (NETC), which is tasked with developing a national policy document on the country's energy transition. The committee's plan should prioritize inclusivity, expert engagement, and open dialogue to build consensus and ownership around a transition pathway.
