Energy: Karpowership Threatens to Cut Power Supply Over $379m Unpaid Debt

Accra, Ghana - 14 Feb, 2025 - Ghana's power sector is teetering on the edge of chaos as Karpowership, operator of the Aboadze power barge, threatens to cut electricity supply unless the government settles its staggering $379 million debt.

This looming crisis is the latest in a string of challenges facing Ghana's energy sector, which is already grappling with liabilities exceeding $3 billion.

The warning shot was fired during a meeting between Energy and Green Transition Minister John Abdulai Jinapor and Karpowership officials on February 10, 2025. Minister Jinapor has appealed for a temporary reprieve, but with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) sounding alarm bells over Ghana's energy debt, time is running out.

The IMF has advised the government to reset its finscal strategies to prevent the sector from imploding under the weight of its financial struggles.
