Accra, Ghana - 30 May, 2025 - Employment Minister Dr. Rashid Pelpuo has urged the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) to reconsider its planned strike on June 9, 2025. The strike, announced on May 28, is in response to unresolved concerns over conditions of service. Dr. Pelpuo warned that the industrial action could have severe consequences on Ghana's healthcare system, emphasizing the need for dialogue between stakeholders.

In a statement, Dr. Pelpuo highlighted the far-reaching impact of strikes on society and development, stressing that employers and stakeholders must work together to find solutions.

“When we embark on the strike, it has a total effect on society. In whatever sector you belong to, it has a direct effect on society and development,” he said.

“This means that employers and stakeholders must always work together to conclude when there is no need for a strike. Eventually, the government must listen to them, the health authorities must listen to them.”

However, the GRNMA's planned strike has sparked divisions within the nursing community. Several nursing unions, including the National Association of Registered Midwives Ghana and the Ghana Registered Midwives Association, have publicly dissociated themselves from the GRNMA's planned strike, citing differences over a previously agreed-upon resolution.

In response, the GRNMA has accused these unions of sabotaging efforts to enhance working conditions, claiming they have neglected the well-being of nurses and midwives.
