Accra Ranked 5th Most Expensive City in Africa for Rent
Accra, Ghana - 08 Jan, 2025 - A recent report by Numbeo, a leading data and research firm, has shed light on the escalating cost of living in African cities. Accra, the capital of Ghana, has emerged as the fifth most expensive city on the continent in terms of rent.
With a rent index score of 12.0, Accra ranks 230th globally, highlighting the significant financial burden faced by residents. The high cost of rent can have far-reaching consequences, including reduced discretionary income for essential expenses such as food, education, and healthcare.
Lagos, Nigeria, tops the list as the most expensive city in Africa, with a staggering rent index score of 24.3, ranking 122nd worldwide. Cape Town, Addis Ababa, and Dar es Salaam follow closely, with rent index scores of 18.0, 17.8, and 14.4, respectively.
In contrast, cities in North Africa, such as Alexandria, Cairo, Tripoli, Algiers, and Tunis, offer relatively affordable rental options.
Experts argue that while urban centers like Accra offer better infrastructure and economic opportunities, the high cost of living can outweigh these benefits. As remote work becomes increasingly prevalent, the importance of urban centers is being reevaluated.
