EC Points to Lawlessness as Trigger for Re-Collation of Parliamentary Votes
Ghana's Electoral Commission (EC) has cited widespread lawlessness by political parties and their supporters as the primary reason for the re-collation of parliamentary results in several constituencies. This development has raised concerns about the integrity of the electoral process.
The affected areas include 10 key constituencies: _Nsawam Adoagyiri, __Ahafo Ano South West, __Ahafo Ano North, __Obuasi East, __Okaikwei Central, __Ablekuma North, __Tema Central, __Techiman South, and __Dome Kwabenya_.
According to Fred Tetteh, Deputy Director of Research at the EC, the commission faced significant disruptions in these areas, making it impossible to complete its work. Tetteh emphasized the need for political parties to maintain discipline among their supporters and adhere to electoral laws to prevent future disruptions.
The EC has assured the public of its commitment to delivering credible elections, despite recent challenges. However, the ongoing issues have sparked concerns about the country's democratic processes and the ability of the EC to manage elections effectively.
“When you look at what is happening and what has happened, specifically, in those 12 constituencies, it is just an issue of lawlessness, rampaging, besieging and preventing our people from going on their work. Supporters, candidates and what have you, came in to disrupt the process, which has led to this situation,” he stated.
