EC annuls election results for Dome Kwabenya, Okaikwei Central, and Ablekuma North, declares them 'illegal'
Ghana's Electoral Commission (EC) has annulled the parliamentary election results for three contentious constituencies, citing serious procedural breaches and threats to its staff.
The affected areas are Dome Kwabenya, Okaikwei Central, and Ablekuma North.
At the heart of the controversy are allegations of improper collation and declaration of results. In Okaikwei Central, for instance, results from 31 polling stations were excluded, while in Ablekuma North, a staggering 62 polling stations were not collated.
At a press conference on Dec 19, EC Chairperson Jean Mensa condemned the actions, stating that the declarations were made under duress and are therefore considered illegal. The Commission made it clear that similar declarations in other constituencies will not be upheld.
“In the case of Okaikwei Central, the winner was declared without collating results from 31 polling stations. In the case of the Ablekuma North, a winner was declared without collating results from 62 polling stations.
“This is unacceptable, the declarations were made under threats and the Commission considers these as illegal. Those declarations similar in other constituencies will not be upheld.”
The annulment is the latest twist in Ghana's contentious parliamentary elections. The EC has faced criticism from the National Democratic Congress (NDC), which has challenged the re-collation.
