Each Parliamentary recall costs atleast GH¢1m - Murtala Mohammed

Accra, Ghana - Nov 8, 2024 - Tamale Central MP Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed has slammed the New Patriotic Party (NPP) caucus for their absence from Parliament's emergency sitting, citing a whopping GH¢1 million daily expense borne by the state.

This criticism comes after Speaker Alban Bagbin's indefinite adjournment of Parliament due to lack of quorum on November 7.

The NPP caucus had requested the emergency sitting, but their no-show left only National Democratic Congress (NDC) members present.

Speaking to the media, Mohammed condemned this absence, labeling it "a blatant disregard" for Parliament's seriousness and a misuse of taxpayer funds. He emphasized the substantial costs, including GH¢1 million daily expenses and disrupted MPs' schedules.

Mohammed expressed disappointment, sharing his personal experience of abandoning rice harvesting in his constituency to attend the sitting. He urged all parties to consider financial implications and prioritize responsible governance, questioning, "Why did they waste all our time?"

“Why did they waste all of our time? It comes with a huge financial burden to the state. Because if I tell you, one day sitting, particularly in circumstances like this, Parliament would spend close to a million or more than one million Cedis. For all members of parliament, our TNT would have to be provided. Imagine the number.

“I was in my constituency as a matter of fact and I went to my farm and started harvesting my rice. I had just two days to go to the farm and come and continue with my campaign but had to cut short my activities and there were several MPs who were engaged in equally very important assignments. All those Members of Parliament abandoned the scene and came to the Chamber.”
