NDC are recruiting thugs to disrupt elections in Ashanti Region- NPP
Accra, Ghana - Nov 20, 2024 - Ghana's ruling party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has leveled serious allegations against the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), claiming they're plotting to incite chaos in the Ashanti Region.
The NPP believes this is part of a broader strategy by the NDC to intimidate voters and undermine support for the party on election day.
Allegations of Training Thugs
At a press conference in Accra, NPP National Organiser Henry Nana Boakye allegedly that the NDC has been secretly training thugs in various communities, including Obuasi East Constituency, under the guise of private security training .
These individuals are allegedly being prepared to disrupt the electoral process, particularly in the Ashanti Region, a stronghold of the NPP.
“Information available to the NPP reveals that several months ago, the NDC has been training thugs in pockets of communities, including Obuasi East Constituency under the guise of private security training. These individuals are being prepared to disrupt the electoral process, particularly in the Ashanti Region which is the NPP stronghold," he stated.
Secret Meetings and Recruitment
The NPP also claims that the NDC's committee on mining, led by Toney Aubynn, held a secret meeting with pro-NDC small-scale miners to recruit members for the NDC's Eagle Force Vigilante Group. The goal, allegedly, is to deploy these individuals to NPP polling stations to cause chaos on election day.
“We are aware that recently on November 11, 2024, the NDC committee on mining led by one Toney Aubynn, the former Chief Executive Officer of the Minerals Commission, held a secret meeting with some NDC small-scale miners at the Conference Hall of Mawuli Hotel in the Obuasi West Municipality.
“One of the aims of the meeting was to recruit some members of the pro-NDC small-scale miners to form part of the NDC’s Eagle Force Vigilante Group which will be deployed to some NPP polling stations to cause mayhem on election day,” he stated.
Denial of Rigging Allegations
In response to allegations made by the NDC, the NPP has denied any involvement with Brigadier General Michael Opoku to rig the polls in the Ashanti Region. The NPP describes these allegations as baseless and devoid of credible evidence.
“The allegations made by the Communication and the NDC are baseless. It is devoid of any iota of credible evidence and represents yet another desperate attempt by the NDC to raise tension and distract the people of Ghana from their own misdeeds.
“You [say] this against a reputable army officer, with baseless allegations, you do not provide any evidence and yet you want us to take you seriously,” he added.
