Bawumia defends digitalization focus, says it's the key to addressing Ghana’s economic challenges

Accra, Ghana - Nov 8, 2024 - Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party, has defended his digitalization-focused economic strategy amid criticisms from opposition parties. Bawumia emphasized that digitalization is integral to addressing Ghana's economic challenges, rather than diverting attention from them.

Speaking at the launch of the National Credit Scoring System, a digital initiative enhancing credit accessibility, Bawumia highlighted digital tools' potential to modernize Ghana's economy.

He cited mobile money interoperability as a successful example, enabling easy transfers across networks and increasing financial inclusion.

Bawumia countered accusations from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and flagbearer John Dramani Mahama, stating, "I was using digitalization to solve economic problems, not abandoning economics." He recalled predicting universal bank account access via mobile money interoperability in 2017, which many deemed impossible but has since become reality.

“When I was pushing for the implementation of these projects, many people said I had abandoned economics to pursue digitalisation. They did not understand that I was just using digitalisation to solve economic problems.

“I remember that when I made a statement in 2017 that with the implementation of mobile money interoperability, every Ghanaian will be able to have a bank account, when I said that, many people did not understand it. They even made jokes about it. They did not think it was possible. But today we have made it possible,'' he added.
