Ghana's Dry North to Get Lifeline as Denmark Set to Unveil Major Water Project in New Year

Accra, Ghana - December 30, 2024 - Denmark has reaffirmed its dedication to supporting Ghana's climate change mitigation efforts, with a significant new water project set to launch in Northern Ghana next year.

Ambassador Tom Norring made the announcement, in an exclusive interview with Lead News' Florence Kyei, highlighting the project's focus on improving access to clean water in areas currently underserved by Ghana Water, particularly in the North-East and Upper West regions.

"In Ghana, climate change affects water access, and we're addressing this challenge head-on," Ambassador Norring explained. "Our collaboration with Ghana Water will bring much-needed water resources to Northern Ghana, benefiting countless communities and enhancing their resilience to climate change."

''The Danish Government is looking at a water project  that will be announced next year. It has to do with putting some money into a project up north, in areas Ghana Water does have access. North-East, Upper West... We are collaborating with Ghana Water to bring water to Northern Ghana. It will be announced in the new year [2025]. It will be quite significant and reach a lot if people. We are also building some efficiency models that are less energy intensive,'' he revealed.

The project is part of Denmark's broader efforts to promote renewable energy and energy efficiency in Ghana. Denmark has established itself as a leader in climate action, aiming to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 70% by 2030 and become a climate-neutral society by 2050.

Denmark's commitment to climate change mitigation in Ghana is longstanding, with the country providing significant funding for climate change adaptation and mitigation projects through its Climate Envelope initiative. This support has helped Ghana develop its climate resilience and reduce its carbon footprint.

As Ambassador Norring emphasized, "We're not just talking about climate action – we're taking concrete steps to support Ghana's climate change fight. We believe that our collaboration will have a lasting impact on the lives of Ghanaians and contribute to a more sustainable future for all.'' he added.
