EC Declares Elikplim Akurugu Winner of Dome Kwabenya Parliamentary Seat

Accra, Ghana - December 31, 2024 -  A prolonged electoral dispute in Ghana's Dome Kwabenya Constituency has been brought to a close, with the Electoral Commission (EC) declaring Faustina Akurugu Elikplim of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as the winner of the parliamentary seat.

EC Chairperson Jean Mensa confirmed the decision during an emergency meeting of the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC), on Tuesday, December 31,

“Today, we are pleased to announce that the proceedings and collation at the Dome Kwabenya Constituency have come to a close. It has gone full circle, and we are convinced beyond any shadow of a doubt that the outcome reflects the will of the people as expressed at the polls.

“Ours is not to make anybody president or MP. Ours is to ensure that our outcome and processes guarantee that the people’s choice is upheld,” she added.

The EC's decision follows a re-collation of votes, which saw Ms. Akurugu Elikplim secure 50,967 votes, ahead of her closest rival, Mike Oquaye Junior of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who got 50,669 votes.

In light of this decision, the planned re-run at the outstanding polling station in the constituency has been cancelled.
