Minority Snub Parliament's Orientation Programme Over Venue Choice

Ho, Volta Region, Ghana - 01 Mar, 2025 - A contentious dispute over the choice of venue and financial burden has led the Minority group, comprising members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), to boycott a crucial three-day orientation programme for members of the 9th Parliament.

The programme, aimed at acquainting members with their roles and responsibilities, kicked off at the Volta Serene Hotel in Ho despite the Minority's absence.

At the heart of the boycott lies a disagreement over the selection process, with the Minority hinting at potential political motivations behind the decision.

Speaker of Parliament Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin expressed disappointment over the Minority's decision, describing their stance as "regrettable and unjustified."

Speaker Bagbin emphasized the importance of the orientation programme in equipping members with the necessary skills and knowledge to discharge their duties effectively. Defending the choice of venue, he explained that a thorough assessment was conducted to evaluate potential venues based on cost, facilities, convenience, and suitability 

According to him, the minority communicated their decision to opt out on the night of Friday, February 28.

“Our brothers and sisters of the New Patriotic Party have opted out, giving a reason that is completely unacceptable,” he said.

“There is always a search team that evaluates potential venues based on cost, facilities, convenience, and suitability before a final decision is made,” he explained.
