Chief Justice orders immediate closure of courts in Bawku conflict zone
Bawku, Ghana, October 30, 2024 - Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo has ordered the immediate closure of seven courts in the Upper East Region due to escalating violence in the Bawku conflict. The decision prioritizes the safety and security of judges, staff, and the public.
Conflict Background
The long-standing chieftaincy dispute between the Kusasi and Mamprusi ethnic groups has resulted in at least 16 deaths and numerous injuries. The conflict's resurgence is linked to the return of rival chief Alhaji Seidu Abagre from exile.
To address the situation, the government has:
- Imposed a curfew from 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM daily
- Increased police presence along the Bolga-Tamale highway
- Established the Bawku Inter-Ethnic Peace Committee for dialogue and reconciliation
