Chairman Wontumi to Face CID Today After Dramatic Arrest Attempt

Accra, Ghana - 26 May, 2025 - The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, is set to appear before the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service today, May 26, 2025.
This development follows a dramatic attempt by a joint team of National Security operatives and police officers to arrest him at his residence last Friday, May 23.
The attempted arrest sparked widespread protests from NPP supporters, who converged on Chairman Wontumi's residence, condemning the deployment of heavily armed security personnel.
Despite the tense standoff, Chairman Wontumi has assured the authorities of his willingness to cooperate, agreeing to present himself to the CID voluntarily.
His legal counsel, Kwame Adom Appiah, has reaffirmed their readiness to comply with the police invitation, stating that Wontumi has nothing to hide and is not afraid of facing the authorities.
“We are practising democracy. Wontumi is not someone who can hide from the cameras. He is not someone who is going to run away. He has investments in Ghana, and he is not going to go anywhere. If you want him any time or day, you are going to get him,” he stated.
“We have not done anything criminal, and we are not afraid of getting to them,” he added.
