CETAG Embarks on Indefinite Strike Over Unresolved Grievances

Accra, Ghana - 2 Jan, 2025 - A major industrial action is underway in Ghana's education sector, as the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) begins an indefinite strike. The move, which took effect on Thursday, January 2, 2025, follows a prolonged dispute between CETAG and the government over unresolved grievances.

At the heart of the issue are allegations of the government's failure to comply with a compulsory arbitration award issued by the National Labour Commission (NLC) on May 2, 2023.

CETAG claims in a statement issued on December 31, 2024 that despite numerous notices and meetings, the government has yet to address their concerns, prompting the association to take drastic action.

The strike is expected to disrupt the academic calendar, with colleges set to resume activities on January 13, 2025. CETAG emphasized  in the statement that its members will not return to work until their demands are met, citing section 159 of the Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651) as the basis for their industrial action.

“The National Council of CETAG wishes to state unequivocally that members of the union shall not under any circumstance return to the colleges to undertake any official duties including teaching, and supervision of project work and macro-teaching, until the last pesewa is paid into our accounts. This declaration of an indefinite strike action is in accordance with section 159 of the Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651),'' portions of the statement read.
