Can Mahama’s Accra Reset Change the Game?
President John Dramani Mahama is set to host a landmark high-level event on the sidelines of the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) to formally launch "The Accra Reset: Reimagining Global Governance for Health and Development". This initiative aims to fundamentally transform the global governance architecture, ensuring it is fit-for-purpose in a turbulent, post-SDG era.
A New Era of Global Cooperation
The Accra Reset asserts that the era of "development-as-usual" is over, and what is required now is a fundamental re-engineering, a Reset of the very logic of global cooperation. This initiative builds on the momentum of the Africa Health Sovereignty Summit held in Accra in August 2025, proposing a new operating logic centered on resilient coalitions, syndicates, and agile platforms capable of delivering tangible results amid global crises.
Key Features of the Accra Reset
- Global Presidential Council: A pioneering body comprising Heads of State and Government from Africa, Asia, Latin America, and other key regions will be established to provide political leadership to drive The Accra Reset's agenda.
- High-Level Advisory Panel: Renowned leaders from health, finance, innovation, and business will be brought together to ensure both political will and intellectual rigor in forging new models for global cooperation.
- Focus on Health: The health sector, acutely exposed to global shocks and an unsustainable aid paradigm, will serve as the initial focus for demonstrating this new thinking and inspiring systemic action across all development sectors.
Why This Matters Now
The UN's 2023 review highlighted that fewer than half of the 169 SDG targets are on track, with global health, inequality, and fiscal resilience in particularly dire straits. As 2030 approaches, the world needs more than another list of promises. The Accra Reset seeks to introduce a bold, actionable framework to fundamentally transform the global governance architecture.
A Call to Action
President Mahama's launch of the Accra Reset is a call to action for global leaders to rethink the way they approach development and cooperation. By establishing a Global Presidential Council and a High-Level Advisory Panel, the initiative aims to combine political will with intellectual expertise to shape new models for global cooperation. The Accra Reset has the potential to mark the beginning of a new era in multilateralism, one that is more resilient, equitable, and responsive to the needs of all nations.
