Black Satellites Edge Senegal 1-0 to Move to Second Place in U-20 Africa Cup

Cairo, Egypt - 06 May, 2025 - Ghana's Black Satellites edged defending champions Senegal 1-0 in a high-stakes match at the ongoing TotalEnergies CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.

Emmanuel Mensah scored the decisive goal in the 15th minute, capitalizing on a well-weighted pass from Jerry Afriyie to slot the ball past the Senegalese goalkeeper.

The match was marked by intense drama, physicality, and goalmouth action, with Senegal launching relentless attacks after the break. Ibrahima Dieng was a notable threat for the Young Teranga Lions, registering multiple attempts on goal, including a close-range header in the 81st minute that Ghana's goalkeeper Gidios Aseako smartly saved.

Despite introducing fresh legs, including Omar Sarr and Norbert Gomis, Senegal struggled to break down Ghana's disciplined defense. Clayton Diandy's long-range shots tested the Ghanaian keeper, but Aseako's heroics and the team's resolute defending kept Senegal at bay.

The win propels Ghana to second place in Group C, tied with DR Congo on four points but trailing on goal difference. Senegal, meanwhile, now faces a must-win situation in their final group match against DR Congo. Ghana's next challenge is against the Central African Republic in Ismailia on Thursday.

Ghana's coach, Desmond Ofei, made two changes to the team that drew 1-1 with DR Congo in their opening match, with Abdul Hakim Sulemana and Andrews Adjabeng dropping out of the starting lineup. The victory has boosted the team's confidence ahead of their next fixture.
