Police Invite Leader Afenyo-Markin for Allegedly Assaulting Police Officer

Accra, Ghana - 06 May, 2025 -The Ghana Police Service has formally invited Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin to aid in an investigation into an alleged assault on a police officer during the 'Save the Judiciary demonstration' which took place yesterday.
The invitation follows a thorough review of multiple video footages of the incident, which led the police to seek Afenyo-Markin's cooperation in the probe.
In a formal request, the police have written to the Speaker of Parliament, asking for Afenyo-Markin's release to aid the investigation. The officer involved in the alleged altercation will also be assisting with inquiries.
The incident has sparked controversy, with some defending Afenyo-Markin's actions. Bright Ofori Ampofo, Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Bortianor Ngleshie Amanfro, has claimed that the lawmaker was forced to retaliate after being struck by a police officer.
The police investigation aims to determine the circumstances surrounding the alleged assault and to establish the facts of the incident.
