Be professional - Bawumia charges Police to ensure peaceful elections
Accra, Ghana - October 30, 2024 - Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has urged the Ghana Police Service to maintain peace and stability during the upcoming December elections.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony for 430 newly promoted Assistant Superintendents of Police, Dr. Bawumia emphasized the critical role police play in upholding democracy.
"The Ghana Police Service has consistently demonstrated professionalism during past elections," Dr. Bawumia noted. "We count on your continued neutrality, fairness, and firmness to ensure a peaceful and incident-free electoral process."
Dr. Bawumia cautioned against complacency, citing current security challenges and heightened political tensions. He highlighted the government's investments in police training, logistics, and equipment to strengthen their capacity.
“Every election presents its nuisance situation. We are, however, confident in the professionalism of the police. The police are always at the centre of elections in Ghana and officers must act responsibly.
“The neutral, fair and firm policing that we have had before should be the reason for optimism. The good conduct of officers during the recent voter registration and exhibition exercise also provides a great blueprint and confidence for the main elections.
“The Ghana Police Service, you have done it before and we are counting on you to do it again by maintaining high professional standards in the discharge of your duties. You are setting the perfect tone for the nation to follow in delivering a peaceful and incident-free election,'' he added.
