Bawumia Hits Back at NPP 'Foes' Over Tribal, Religious Rhetoric
New York ,USA,August 24,2025 - Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former Vice President, has strongly criticized his opponents in the NPP flagbearership race for resorting to tribal and religious propaganda. In a speech at the NPP's 33rd anniversary celebration in New York, Dr. Bawumia cautioned that these tactics not only lack merit but also threaten the party's cohesion and image.
Dr. Bawumia urged his competitors to focus on policies, ideas, and proven leadership records rather than attempting to sow disunity. "If you want to contest me, come with a vision, come with your ideas, come with your track record, come with your integrity and let us decide," he said. "Your message cannot be that I am a Muslim, a northerner or a Mamprusi man. That is not the politics of the NPP."
He dismissed claims that the NPP lost the 2024 elections because of his northern and Muslim background, citing Professor Mike Oquaye's report, which investigated the party's defeat. According to the report, religion and tribe were not factors in voter behavior, with nearly 80% of respondents attributing their voting decisions to disappointment with the government.
The former Vice President also presented election data dating back to 1965, showing that the NPP has historically struggled to win seats in the Bawku zone, regardless of its presidential candidate. "The Bawku conflict was not a factor in the outcome of the 2024 election. The data is clear," he asserted.
As the party prepares for its flagbearership contest, outcome will be crucial in determining the NPP's direction and its chances of success in future elections.
