Ayariga Proposes Pension Scheme for Former MPs
Mahama Ayariga is MP for Bawku Central and Majority Leader in Ghana's Parliament.

Accra, Ghana - 30 Jan, 2025 - A proposal to establish a pension scheme for former Members of Parliament (MPs) in Ghana has been presented to the legislature by Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga.

The Bawku central MP has called for the creation of a committee to explore various pension scheme models, with the aim of providing financial support to lawmakers after they leave office.

According to him, the proposed scheme would be funded through proceeds from carbon credits, a innovative approach that could provide a sustainable source of funding.

“I’m proposing to this House for us to design a pension scheme that will cater for the needs of MPs when they decide not to run again.

“Or they lose their elections and they’re no longer here in this house. Mr Speaker, it’s a noble thing to serve your constituency in this house. And sometimes people serve for a very long time.

“I know of colleagues in this house who have been here for the past 24 years. And yet, those people leave this house without adequate pension arrangements to cater for their needs so that they can live in dignity,'' he added.
