Bawumia Celebrates Ghana Star Kudus’ Tottenham Transfer

Accra, Ghana - 11 July, 2025 - Former Ghanaian Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has publicly celebrated the imminent transfer of Ghanaian footballer Mohammed Kudus to Tottenham Hotspur, a move that marks a significant milestone for the 24-year-old star and underscores the growing influence of Ghanaian talent in global football.

The £55m deal, agreed between Tottenham and West Ham United on July 9, 2025, will see Kudus undergo a medical before signing a six-year contract with the North London club, ending a 14-year hiatus in direct transfers between the rival teams.

Dr Bawumia, an avid Tottenham supporter, expressed his pride on social media, highlighting the national excitement surrounding Kudus’ high-profile move as he prepares to compete in the Premier League and UEFA Champions League.

“I am excited to see our Ghanaian starboy make this move to my @SpursOfficial. All the best in your medical @KudusMohammedGH,'' he wrote on X.

The transfer, reported by The Guardian and The Athletic, represents a record-breaking moment for Ghanaian football, with the £55m fee surpassing the £50m Arsenal paid for Thomas Partey in 2020. Kudus, who joined West Ham from Ajax in 2023 for £38m, made an immediate impact, scoring 14 goals and providing nine assists in his debut season, earning him the Premier League’s best newcomer award from Sky Sports’ Gary Neville. His flair, direct dribbling, and versatility—playing across the front line and as a No 10 for Ghana—made him a standout, despite a dip in form last season with five goals and four assists in 35 appearances. His memorable solo goal against Freiburg in the 2023/24 UEFA Europa League, nominated for the 2024 FIFA Puskas Award, cemented his reputation as a dynamic attacker.

Tottenham’s pursuit of Kudus, led by new head coach Thomas Frank, reflects their ambition to bolster their attack for a Champions League campaign following their Europa League triumph in May 2025. The club initially offered £50m, which West Ham rejected, citing their need to comply with Premier League profitability and sustainability rules.

Negotiations progressed, with Spurs securing the deal below Kudus’ £85m release clause, active only in the first 10 days of July. The transfer, the first from West Ham to Tottenham since Scott Parker’s £5m move in 2011, has stirred mixed sentiments among West Ham fans, with some expressing dismay on social media over losing their star to a rival.
