Bawku under curfew as chieftaincy dispute turns violent
Bawku, Upper East Region, Ghana - October 28, 2024 - The Ghanaian government has imposed a daily curfew on Bawku, in the Upper East Region, from 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM, effective Monday.
This decision follows a surge in violence linked to a long-standing chieftaincy dispute, resulting in at least eight fatalities and multiple injuries.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo chaired an emergency National Security Council meeting to address the escalating violence.
CAUSES OF VIOLENCE
The return of rival chief Alhaji Seidu Abagre from exile has intensified tensions, prompting the government's action.
GOVERNMENT RESPONSE
In a statement released on Monday, October 28, 2024, the Ministry of the Interior cited Abagre's presence as a significant threat to public safety. Residents are urged to comply with the curfew, with security agencies enforcing strict adherence.
