Bawku in Flames: Angry Youth Set Fire to Mahama Ayariga's House, IGP Yohuno Rushes to Scene

Bawku, Upper East Region, Ghana - 10 April, 2025 -Tensions have flared in Bawku, Ghana's Upper East Region, after a violent confrontation between police and youth left one person dead and five others injured, with agitated youth setting ablaze the residence of local MP Mahama Ayariga.

The unrest began after a young man, Fuseini Iddrisu, was allegedly killed by police, sparking widespread outrage and protests.

Escalating Violence
On April 9, 2025, a joint operation by the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana Armed Forces restored calm in Bawku. However, tensions have reignited as agitated youth set ablaze the residence of local Member of Parliament, Mahama Ayariga, in the Wiidi suburb. The attack was preceded by stone-throwing and vandalism, with the violence escalating into an arson attack the next morning.


Meanwhile, Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has led a high-powered team to Bawku to assess the security situation and work towards de-escalating tensions. The police in aa statement have assured the public of their continued collaboration with the Ghana Armed Forces, traditional authorities, and other stakeholders to maintain peace and security in the region.

Background to the Conflict
Bawku has experienced recurring episodes of violence, often sparked by chieftaincy disputes and rivalries between different factions. The recent clash is believed to be linked to long-standing tensions between the Kusasi and Mamprusi communities in the area. The Ghanaian government has deployed security forces to the region to restore order and maintain law and order.

Security Measures
To address the situation, the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana Armed Forces have deployed joint teams to Bawku and along the Bolgatanga-Walewale-Tamale highway to ensure public safety and manage traffic flow. The security agencies have reiterated their commitment to preserving peace, law, and order in the region.
