Armed men storm Abetifi Palace in attempt to oust Kwahu Adontenhene
Kwahu, Ghana - Nov 7, 2024 - A chaotic scene unfolded in Kwahu Abetifi as a group of armed men, accompanied by Obaapanyin Yaa Asantewaa, attempted to destool Kwahu Adontenhene Akyemfour Asiedu Agyemang III, the acting President of the Kwahu Traditional Area.
The situation escalated into violence, leaving six individuals hospitalized.
According to Citi News, the incident began when Yaa Asantewaa, posing as the Abrewatia (chief's wife) of the Kwahu area, arrived in Abetifi with the armed group, initially believed to be National Security operatives. They detained Akyemfour Asiedu Agyemang III at the Abetifi Palace and forcibly moved him to a nearby older palace, where Yaa Asantewaa performed traditional rites to destool him, including slaughtering a sheep.
News of the attempted destoolment sparked outrage among local youth, who gathered in protest, armed with machetes. However, timely intervention by local law enforcement, supported by police and military personnel, prevented further violence.
In response, traditional leaders in Abetifi conducted their own rites, reaffirming Akyemfour Asiedu Agyemang III as the legitimate chief and restoring him to his position at the main Abetifi Palace.
The police have initiated investigations and arrested Yaa Asantewaa and the armed men. To ensure their safety, they were taken to the police station under strict protection.
