Mahama slams gov't over treatment of Democracy Hub protesters

Accra, Ghana - Former President John Dramani Mahama has slammed the Ghanaian government for its handling of protesters from the Democracy Hub, who demonstrated against galamsey (illegal mining).

The peaceful protest turned violent when some demonstrators clashed with police at the 37 Roundabout in Accra.

Mahama took to Facebook to express his discontent, labeling the two-week remand decision as "high-handed" and an "abuse of their rights".

He emphasized the need for balance between maintaining law and order and safeguarding citizens' rights and freedoms.

"I am deeply concerned about the high-handed treatment of the Democracy Hub protesters who were exercising their constitutional right to peaceful demonstration.

The decision to remand them for two weeks is an abuse of their rights and an affront to our democratic principles.

As a nation, we must strike a balance between maintaining law and order and protecting the rights and freedoms of our citizens.

Our youth have a right to speak out against issues that affect their future, especially environmental destruction,'' part of the post read.
