Appiah-Kubi Advises Mahama to Rethink 60-Ministerial Cap
Andy Appiah-Kubi is for MP of Asante Akyem North

Accra, Ghana - 12 Jan, 2025 - Former Ghanaian Member of  Parliament for Asante Akyem North, Andy Kwame Appiah-Kubi has urged President John Dramani Mahama to reconsider his campaign promise to limit the number of ministers to 60, if the demands of governance require otherwise.

In an interview with TV3 on Saturday, 11 Jan, Appiah-Kubi noted that while a lean government is desirable, it should not compromise the country's progress. He cited the example of former President John Agyekum Kufuor, who adjusted his campaign promises after taking office.

Appiah-Kubi emphasized the importance of flexibility in governance, advising Ghanaians to be pragmatic about campaign commitments. He expressed support for a lean government but cautioned against rigidly holding the president to his campaign pledge.

“Let Mr. Mahama consider that campaign message as presidential candidate then. Now he is our President, let him think presidential. If for any reason he thinks that Ghana cannot do with 60 ministers, let him do what is good for the country,” Appiah-Kubi stated.

“I cited also President Kufuor, who before he became President, gave out certain indices. He came to be a President, and the realities dawned on him that what he was talking about in his capacity as a presidential candidate was different from what he was seeing in his seat as President,” he explained.

“Indeed, bringing us a lean government is a policy that I admire and respect, but let us not hold him to it,” he added.
