Akufo-Addo's Govt Left GHS105bn Unpaid Commitments - Construction Chamber

Accra, Ghana - 21 April, 2025 - Ghana's construction industry is facing a significant challenge as the Ghana Chamber of Construction Industry reveals that the Nana Akufo-Addo's government left behind GHS105 billion in unpaid commitments for road and infrastructure projects.
According to Emmanuel Cherry, Chief Executive Officer of the Chamber, this staggering amount represents contracts awarded but not fully executed or completed before the previous administration left office. Speaking in an interview, Cherry explained that the figure has become clearer after the release of the 2025 budget.
The Chamber is now calling on the government to urgently release GHS21 billion to contractors who have already executed projects worth this amount. Cherry emphasized that this payment is crucial for contractors to remain liquid and return to site in an interview with Channel One Newsroom on Sunday, April 20.
“As we speak now, the commitment is GHS105 billion,” Cherry stated. “These are contracts awarded for road construction, bridges, overheads and related infrastructure, but many of them have either not started or are yet to be completed.”
The unpaid commitments have raised concerns about the impact on the construction industry and the economy as a whole. The Ghana Chamber of Construction Industry is urging the government to settle these debts to prevent further disruptions to ongoing projects.
“This means government now needs to cough up GHS21 billion for contractors so they can continue their work,” he added.
