Ghana Police Bust Ammunition Smuggling Attempt, Seize 33,000 Rounds on Accra-Benin Road

Volta Region, Ghana - 21 April, 2025 - Ghana's police have seized a large cache of ammunition in a dramatic early morning bust at a checkpoint in the Volta Region.
Officers discovered 33,000 rounds of live ammunition hidden in sacks beneath passenger luggage on a bus traveling from Accra to Benin.
The haul, intercepted on Friday, April 18, 2025, included 15,000 rounds of AAA cartridges and 18,000 rounds of BB cartridges. Authorities arrested two men in connection with the seizure: Abasou Fousseni, 45, the driver, and Salisu Jalilu, 38, the co-driver.
According to police, the co-driver is believed to have loaded the ammunition onto the bus without the driver's knowledge. While the driver has been granted bail to continue his journey, the co-driver remains in custody and is expected to appear in court on Tuesday, April 22, 2025.
The Ghana Police Service, in a statement, has reiterated its commitment to tackling transnational crime and maintaining regional security. This seizure highlights the ongoing efforts of Ghanaian law enforcement to prevent the smuggling of illicit goods and protect national security.
The incident has raised concerns about the potential misuse of such large quantities of ammunition and the possible links to organized crime or terrorism.
According to the police investigation is ongoing to determine the intended destination and purpose of the smuggled ammunition.
