Accra, Ghana - 17 Jan, 2025 - Ghana's New Patriotic Party (NPP) suffered a significant defeat in the 2024 general election, and a political science lecturer at the University of Cape Coast, Dr. Jonathan Asante has attributed 60% of the blame to former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo's leadership.

Dr. Asante made these remarks in response to comments by former NPP Vice Chairman Sammy Crabbe, who described the party as weak.

According to Dr. Asante, the neglect of party structures was a major contributor to the NPP's defeat.

In an interview with Citi News, he also cited the arrogance displayed by government appointees as a factor that led to mass opposition against the party's bid for re-election. Dr. Asante emphasized that the party's structures were weak, likening it to a "one-man show".

In a further analysis, Dr. Asante noted that the future of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) party's electoral fortunes hinges heavily on the performance of the current Mahama-led administration.

“What happened to them is like what is in Jeremiah, where it is said that the fathers have eaten sour grapes and the children’s teeth are set on edge. I think Mr. Akufo-Addo contributed about 60 percent of Dr. Bawumia’s defeat, and Dr. Bawumia himself contributed about 40 percent,'' he stated.

“Now that being said, the arrogance that the appointees of government displayed, all these things contributed as intangibles that led to that mass opposition to the renewal of their mandate in the 2024 elections. And so the good will is not there. The structures are weak in the sense that it was more or less like a one-man show,'' he added.
