Galamsey threatens Ghana's water supply - Water Resources Commission

Accra, Ghana - The Ghana Water Resources Commission has issued a dire warning, calling for an immediate halt to illegal mining activities nationwide.

In an interview on JoyNews' AM Show, Eng. Samson Tettey emphasized the urgent need to stop "galamsey" due to its devastating impact on the country's water resources and public health.

Tettey expressed concern that irresponsible individuals are jeopardizing the safety and well-being of the entire Ghanaian population, particularly those who cannot afford to treat contaminated water in their homes.

"The side effects of this illegal mining are very serious, and we really need to take that fight seriously. The question is, how many people can afford to treat their water? So that is why I go back to protecting the source so that every Ghanaian is having wholesome water in their home to drink."

"Because some can afford the treatment system and everybody has to drink water, where government and regulatory bodies must come in and take responsibility and make sure this irresponsible mining that few people are gaining from has to be stopped," he said.

The Commission is urging authorities to take swift and decisive action against illegal mining, stressing the need for protective measures to safeguard the nation's water supply.
