President Mahama Pledges 6 Months' Salary to Ghana Medical Trust Fund

Accra, Ghana - 29 April, 2025 - President John Dramani Mahama has pledged to donate six months' worth of his salary to the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, a new initiative aimed at providing financial support to Ghanaians affected by chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs).

The fund, launched in Accra today, seeks to alleviate the financial burden of accessing specialist care for individuals living with conditions such as diabetes, cancer, and hypertension.

During the launch, President Mahama called on corporate bodies to support the initiative, emphasizing that the fund's success relies on collective efforts. He urged banks, mining companies, and other businesses to allocate a portion of their corporate social responsibility budgets to the fund, highlighting that such contributions would directly benefit the people on whom these institutions depend.

“This programme must not be seen as the government’s effort alone,” he said. “The people this fund will help are not only citizens; they are your clients, your customers, and even your own staff.”

“This fund is going to do a lot of good to our country,” he added. “I hope my contribution encourages corporate Ghana to do even more,'' Mahama added.

The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, also demonstrated his commitment to the cause, pledging to donate three months' worth of his salary to the fund.

The Ghana Medical Trust Fund was a key campaign promise made by the National Democratic Congress during the 2024 elections.

The initiative aims to work in conjunction with Ghana's primary healthcare efforts, supporting early screening and targeted treatment, particularly for underserved communities.

The launch event saw donations from individuals, including retired medical professionals, and support from CalBank. President Mahama expressed his hope that his contribution would encourage corporate Ghana to do more, ultimately benefiting those in need of medical care.
