Abetifi Palace Invasion: 26 arrested over kidnapping, destoolment attempt
Abetifi, Ghana - Nov 9, 2024 - A shocking incident unfolded in Kwahu Abetifi on Thursday, November 7, as a group of armed men stormed the Abetifi Palace, sparking a violent clash with residents.
The confrontation left six individuals injured and led to the kidnapping of Akyemfour Asiedu Agyemang III, Kwahu Abetifihene and acting President of the Kwahu Traditional Area.
At the center of the controversy is Obaapanyin Yaa Asantewaa, who posed as the Abrewatia (chief's wife) of the Kwahu area. Accompanied by armed men, Yaa Asantewaa allegedly attempted to destool Akyemfour Asiedu Agyemang III, performing traditional rites, including the ritual slaughtering of a sheep, at a nearby older palace.
The Mpraeso District Court, presided over by Her Lordship Adwoa Akyemaa Ofosu, has taken swift action, remanding 26 suspects, including one female, into police custody. They are set to reappear on November 14, 2024, to face charges related to the incident.
The attempted destoolment sparked widespread outrage among local youth, who armed themselves with machetes and gathered in protest. The situation remains tense, with concerns about the implications for the Kwahu Traditional Area.
