Abetifi Court reverses decision, frees 27 accused in Chieftaincy row

In a surprise move, a Ghanaian court has granted bail to 27 individuals accused of involvement in a violent chieftaincy dispute. The Mpraeso Circuit Court's decision marks a reversal of its earlier ruling, which denied the accused bail.

The court's change of heart came after a passionate plea from the defendants' lawyers, who argued that their clients should be released on bail. The accused have now been granted freedom, pending their reappearance in court on December 19, 2024.

The bail conditions include a bond of GH¢200,000, with two sureties and one justification. The accused are expected to meet these conditions to secure their release.

The lawyer representing the accused, Captain Nkrabeah Effah Darteh, welcomed the court's decision, praising the judge for her fairness and commitment to upholding the law.

“The law is working, and the judge has been fair, and I want to commend her. She listened to both sides and applied the law, and so I am happy that the 27 people have been admitted to court bail to reappear on December 19. Everything must be resolved in the courtroom, and there is no need for violence anywhere.”
