Supreme Court halts Speaker's ruling on vacant parliamentary seats
Accra, Ghana - October 18, 2024 - Ghana's Supreme Court has granted a stay of execution on Speaker Alban Bagbin's ruling that declared four parliamentary seats vacant.
The decision affects Cynthia Morrison (Agona West), Kwadjo Asante (Suhum), Andrew Amoako Asiamah (Fomena), and Peter Kwakye Ackah (Amenfi Central).
The Speaker's ruling followed a motion by former Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu, citing constitutional provisions requiring MPs to vacate their seats upon switching parties or running as independents.
The Supreme Court's intervention halts implementation of the ruling, maintaining the status quo in Parliament until further review.
