Parliamentary Impasse: We will not confront NDC, we will just walk out - Afenyo-Markin

Accra, Ghana -  October 21, 2024 - A potential showdown is brewing in Ghana's Parliament as the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) clash over the majority seat.

The NDC, now with 136 seats, has declared its intention to take control of the Majority side following Speaker Alban Bagbin's ruling that declared four parliamentary seats vacant.

The NDC plans to occupy the Majority side of the chamber and push through several legislative changes, including amendments to the Communication Tax (e-levy) and the appointment of a new Second Deputy Speaker. However, Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin while speaking on Peace FM on Monday, October 21, dismissed suggestions of a confrontation, stating that the NPP would rather walk out than engage in any conflict.

Afenyo-Markin emphasized that the NPP is aware of the ongoing legal proceedings surrounding the parliamentary impasse and is focused on adhering to the Supreme Court's orders.

“As far as we are concerned, the Supreme Court has issued a directive, and Parliament will be served. If the need arises, we will simply walk out,” he stated.

The Court has issued a directive, and a bailiff is expected to serve Parliament with the Court's orders.
