One shot, several injured in clash between Cynthia Morrison's supporters and Agona West NPP

Accra, Ghana - October 28, 2024 - A violent clash broke out between supporters of rival parliamentary candidates Chris Arthur and Cynthia Morrison in Agona Swedru, Ghana, on Sunday, October 27, 2024.

The incident left one person with gunshot wounds and several others with minor injuries.

According to eyewitnesses, Chris Arthur's campaign team was returning from a launch event in Otinkorang when they encountered Cynthia Morrison's supporters at Agona Nyankrom. As they attempted to pass through the crowd, a gun was fired, striking Haruna Rashid, Chris Arthur's campaign team manager, in the ribs.

Jibril Tanko, NPP Agona West constituency chairman, alleged that Cynthia Morrison's team attacked them without provocation. "The atmosphere was charged, and Cynthia Morrison's supporters started attacking us," he said.

“It is unfortunate we were attacked after we went on a campaign tour with our Parliamentary Candidate at Otinkorang. Our MP, Cynthia Morrison, was also launching her campaign at Agona Nyankrom and we had to go through the crowd at Nyankrom before getting to our destination. The atmosphere in the crowd was a bit charged and Cynthia Morrison’s supporters started attacking us.

“I even told my Parliamentary Candidate that the way things were going, we could not pass through the crowd but the unfortunate thing happened. A gun was fired and the bullet hit Haruna Rashid, the campaign team manager for Chris Arthur and he has been rushed to Accra for treatment.''

“We are surprised by the campaign team of Cynthia Morrison and we have made official complaints to the police in the area. We want the police to apprehend the culprit. But we will not relent in our efforts and will ensure that Chris is successful in his parliamentary bid.”' he added.

The incident has been reported to the Central Regional Police Command, who have launched an investigation to identify and arrest the perpetrator. 

“Our appeal to the police is that even though we do not know the perpetrators of the gunshot, we are very much aware of the identity or we have identified the person who threw the alcoholic drink on the driver. And so we expect the police to act according to the report we have given.

“We trust also the investigative skills of the police and we expect the police to do a thorough investigation into this matter to get the perpetrators into book. And we believe that when this is done, there will be peace.

“There will be peace. The peace that we are enjoying in Agona West will continue. Adolf is one of the bodyguards of Cynthia Morrison and he is the one who threw the alcoholic drink onto the driver of the bus or the van that is part of the campaign tour of Christopher Arthur,'' the stated.

Both Chris Arthur and Cynthia Morrison's teams are urging the police to conduct a thorough investigation to prevent further violence.

Cynthia Morrison’s representative on the side also called for investigations to apprehend the perpetrators.

“After the incident, the MP has been very worried. She is a woman. She has affection for her constituents. And she thinks that this is not the way to go. So, she has been very much worried and we are calling on the police to take charge of this investigation.

“We are calling on the police to bring the perpetrators to justice. We want the truth to be established so that at the end of the day, everybody can go about his campaign normally. This will not deter her from going on with her campaign. She is going to progress and touch base at every electoral area.”
