Napo resigns as Energy Minister
Ghana's Energy Minister, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, also known as "Napo," has resigned.
This move follows his nomination and confirmation as the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) running mate for the 2024 elections in December. The resignation is intended to allow him to fully focus on his new post as the party works to break the eight-year cycle.
The presidency published a statement on Thursday, July 11, signed by Communications Director Eugene Arhin, stating that Dr. Prempeh's resignation will take effect on Thursday, July 18.
The statement further stated that President Akufo-Addo has accepted his resignation and expressed appreciation for his devotion and service to the country.
Dr. Prempeh's resignation represents a significant shift as he takes on a crucial role in the NPP's campaign activities, demonstrating his dedication to the party's future success.
"The President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has today, Thursday, 11th July 2024, accepted the resignation from the office of Hon. Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, as Minister for Energy, with effect from 18th July 2024."
"This decision has been made to enable Dr Opoku Prempeh to focus on his new role as the Vice-Presidential Candidate and Running Mate to the 2024 Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia."
"His tenure as Minister for Education and as Minister for Energy has been marked by a stellar record of accomplishments and significant contributions to the education and energy sectors," the statement from the presidency said.
