NPP MP files complaint against Media General over 'distorted' Galamsey video
Accra, Ghana - Dr. Nana Ayew Afriyie, the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) Member of Parliament for Effiduase Asokore, has taken a stand against Media General, filing a complaint with the National Media Commission (NMC) for allegedly misrepresenting his comments on illegal mining, also known as galamsey.
The controversy surrounds a statement attributed to Dr. Afriyie, suggesting that the NPP government wouldn't end galamsey due to potential harm to the party's chances in the upcoming December general elections.
However, Dr. Afriyie claims his remarks were distorted. Through his lawyers, he accused Media General of unprofessional editing and misrepresentation, intending to cause public disaffection and damage his reputation as a medical doctor, politician, and MP.
The NMC has forwarded the complaint to Media General for their input, and a response is awaited.
In a related development, the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has been petitioned to sanction Dr. Afriyie for his stance on galamsey, which contradicts the association's official position.
Dr. Samuel Ayeh, a GMA member, seeks severe sanctions against Dr. Afriyie to "send the strongest of signals about the association's commitment to the fight against illegal mining" and "most importantly signal to all members of the association the need to maintain high ethical standards befitting of medical practitioners in Ghana."
As the situation unfolds, Dr. Afriyie's legal team awaits a response from the NMC, while the GMA considers the petition against him.
