Massive crop losses in Bono Region as drought ravages farming communities

A severe drought has devastated crops across the 12 Municipal and District Assemblies in the Bono Region, leaving farmers in distress and struggling to cope with significant losses.

Boffourkrom, a major farming community in the Sunyani West Municipality, is among the worst-affected areas. The drought has destroyed acres of maize, pepper, and other crops, forcing many farmers to abandon their farms.

Farmers in the region are now counting their losses, with some struggling emotionally as they watch their crops wither away.

Martin Noharu, a 45-year-old farmer and the 2016 Sunyani West Municipal Best Farmer, has seen his 50-acre maize farm severely impacted by the lack of rainfall.

“I’ve never seen anything like this before,” he said, “I’m struggling to come to terms with the loss.”

Two other farmers, Akua Konadu and Kwame Asante, shared similar experiences, describing the devastating impact of the drought on their crops and livelihoods.

Cletus Gaakung, Assemblyman for Boffourkrom Electoral Area, acknowledged the severity of the situation and is providing psychological support to the affected farmers.

He encouraged farmers to plant trees to mitigate the effects of future droughts.

The farmers are calling on authorities to provide them with support and relief to help them recover from this disaster.
