Mahama's commitment to fighting galamsey unshaken - Kofi Adams
Accra, Ghana - October 26, 2024 - Former President John Mahama has reaffirmed his commitment to combating illegal mining, known as galamsey, in Ghana. According to Kofi Adams, Member of Parliament for the Buem Constituency, Mahama has consistently advocated for stringent measures against those involved in these illicit operations.
Speaking on JoyNews' Newsfile programme, Adams emphasized Mahama's unwavering stance on the issue, stressing the need to hold influential individuals accountable for exploiting Ghana's natural resources. Mahama's concerns extend beyond environmental degradation, addressing the social impact of galamsey on local communities where water sources and land are compromised.
Mahama, the flagbearer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the upcoming 2024 general election, has pledged to identify, arrest, and prosecute those orchestrating galamsey operations.
Adams criticized the current government for evading responsibility and shifting blame onto opposition parties, urging them to confront the problem directly.
To effectively tackle the crisis, Adams advocated for a collaborative effort, inclusive of law enforcement and community engagement. He highlighted Mahama's consistency on the issue since 2016, with a renewed focus on targeting the "big men" behind galamsey, rather than just the small-scale operators.
"I don’t think John Mahama has changed his position on Galamsey. He’s been very consistent from 2016 till date. Perhaps, the only new thing he has said is that he asked for the big men behind it to be arrested and not the small boys," he stated.
