Ghanaians' trust in institutions hits record low ahead of 2024 elections - Afrobarometer report

Accra, Ghana - October 26, 2024 - A recent report by the Center for Democratic Development (CDD) has uncovered a worrying decline in public trust in Ghana's institutions.

The Afrobarometer report, launched on October 25, 2024 highlights a significant drop in citizens' confidence in key state entities, including the Electoral Commission.

According to Dr. Edem Selormey, CDD Ghana's Director of Research, trust in institutions has seen only marginal declines since 2022 but remains substantially lower than 2012 levels. The report notes widespread skepticism toward officials perceived as corrupt.

Key findings include:

- 74% of Ghanaians believe corruption levels have increased over the past year.
- Only 26% feel they can report corruption without fear of retaliation.
- Police, tax officials, MPs, judges, and magistrates are ranked as the most corrupt officials.

Despite concerns, 60% of citizens consider the 2020 general election "free and fair." The report's findings raise important questions about institutional accountability ahead of the 2024 elections.
