Ghana needs $5billion to address flooding crisis- Hydrological Authority
Accra, Ghana - The Ghana Hydrological Authority has sounded the alarm on the country's flood crisis, revealing a staggering $5 billion funding gap to effectively tackle the issue.
Appearing before Parliament's Assurance Committee on Wednesday, Dr. John Kissi, CEO of the Authority, emphasized the urgency of securing the funds for comprehensive flood prevention and management nationwide.
Last year's allocation of GH¢92 million under the National Flood Control Programme falls woefully short, according to the Authority, highlighting the need for significant investment to address the perennial flood woes.
"In 2023 under the National Flood Control Programme, we received about GH¢92 million to undertake flood mitigation works across the country.
“The work that we’ve done looking at the flood waste challenges across the country we estimate that we need about $5 billion across the country to address comprehensively the flood waste challenges that we have.
“That is looking across every city and every town in every region of the country,” he stated.
