Mahama mandates NDC MPs to maintain Alban Bagbin as Speaker of Parliament
Accra, Ghana - 05 Jan, 2025 - President-elect John Dramani Mahama has endorsed Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin as the Speaker of the 9th Parliament of the Fourth Republic.
In a statement issued on Sunday Jan 05, 2025, and signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, spokesperson of the Mahama Transition Team, the decision was made in consultation with the National Executive and Parliamentary Leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
According to Mahama, Bagbin's illustrious career in Parliament, spanning from Member of Parliament for Nadowli to Minority and Majority Leader, and subsequently as Speaker of the 8th Parliament, makes him an ideal candidate for the position. His wealth of experience will be crucial in guiding Parliament's affairs during this critical period in Ghana's democratic and legislative development.
The President-elect also expressed confidence that under Bagbin's leadership, Ghana's Parliament will be empowered to deliver effectively on its oversight responsibility.
''The President elect, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, has in consultation with the National Executive and Parliamentary Leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), mandated the nomination of the Right Honorable Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin as Speaker of the 9th Parliament of the Fourth Republic.
''Rt. Hon. Bagbin has distinguished himself in the service of Parliament, rising from Member of Parliament for Nadowli to Minority and Majority Leader respectively, and subsequently as Speaker of the 8th Parliament.
''He brings a wealth of experience to the position, which will prove vital in steering the affairs of Parliament at this critical period in Ghana's democratic and legislative development.
''The President-elect is convinced that under the stewardship of the Right Honorable Alban Bagbin, Ghana's Parliament will be further strengthened to deliver effectively on it's oversight responsibility,'' portions of the statement read.
