Ghana suffers setback in AFCON Qualifiers with 2-0 loss to Sudan
Khartoum, Sudan - October 15, 2024 - Sudan's Men's National Football Team secured a crucial 2-0 victory over Ghana in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, bolstering their chances of reaching the Morocco tournament.
Former Ghana head coach James Kwasi Appiah, now at the helm of Sudan, expressed mixed emotions during the post-game press conference. "I'm happy Sudan won, but disappointed it came at Ghana's expense," Appiah said.
The win propelled Sudan to seven points in Group F, while Ghana remains third with just two points from four games. Appiah's allegiances now lie with Sudan, but his affection for Ghana remains evident.
"It's a tough loss for Ghana, and I feel for them," Appiah acknowledged. "However, this win is vital for Sudan's qualification hopes."
Every game is serious but Insha Allah the next we will try to get at least a win to qualify automatically. It’s unfortunate because Ghana has a good team and it’s unfortunate that one of us, Ghana or us has to go out and unfortunately for Ghana, Sudan has beaten them so automatically, Sudan will have to go,'' he stated.
Sudan's victory inches them closer to AFCON 2025, while Ghana's dwindling chances leave them facing an uphill battle.
