Ghana's Black Queens to face Defending Champions South Africa in WAFCON Opener

The stage is set for the 2024 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) as the draw for the group stages has been announced. Defending champions South Africa will face a stiff challenge from Ghana's Black Queens, who are making a return to the competition after a two-edition absence.

The group stages will see some thrilling matchups, with record champions Nigeria drawn against Tunisia, Algeria, and Botswana in group B. Hosts Morocco, who were finalists in 2022, will face Zambia, Senegal, and DR Congo in group A.

The top two teams from each group will automatically qualify for the quarterfinals, along with the two best third-placed teams. For Ghana, a semifinal spot would be enough to secure a return to the FIFA Women's World Cup after an 18-year absence.

The WAFCON is set to take place from July 5 to 26, 2025, and promises to be an exciting showcase of African women's football.
